Short Description of Dallas Brooks Park
Dallas Brooks Scout Park is an area of bush at the end of Harpfield Road, Beaconsfield Upper, Victoria, Australia. The site covers about 60 hectares and has mains water, and two halls with showers and toilets. The Park is designed to be under-developed in order in order to offer simpler values, where children can play and explore the wilderness in a safe protected, secure setting.
The Beginnings of Dallas Brooks Park
In 1952, a group of dreamers from the Caulfield District of the then Boy Scouts Association, acquired 120 acres of forest near the southern end of Harpfield Rd in Upper Beaconsfield to be used by the entire District. The property was comprised of the Chalet as well as a damand a bridge that was constructed in the 1950s by Army Engineers, one of who died while working in the area (a plaque is still on the bridge to mark the tragic event) and several tanks and shelters scattered around the property. A group of leaders who were interested along with district leaders from the District Association slowly developed the site, including Camp Control with Jim Sneddon and Ken Walters taking key roles in the design of camp sites as well as all the other aspects of the site.
The people who care for Dallas Brooks Park
A small number comprised of former Scouters in the Caulfield District and some dedicated volunteers do what they can to keep the campsite secure. The cost of camping is affordable and there aren’t other income sources. Maintenance and care for the site are dependent heavily upon the kindness of those who are devoted to this place.
