It is located in the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria at Cranbourne Gardens is a division of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (the second division is that of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne located in the central region of Melbourne). It is situated within the suburban area of Cranbourne approximately 45 kilometers south-east of Melbourne city center.

Cranbourne Gardens specializes in Australian native plants. The total area of the botanic garden is 363 hectares. This includes woodlands, wetlands, and heathlands. The gardens also offer habitat for native mammals, birds, and reptiles, as well as rare and endangered species.

Indigenous Australian Boon Wurrung inhabitants lived in the region close to Cranbourne prior to the arrival of Europeans. The location for Cranbourne Gardens was used for mining sand in the 1820s, mostly to provide the construction in Melbourne as well as its surrounding suburbs. The military was able to use the area from 1889 to 1953, and private licenses were being issued for grazing, sand mining as well as timber collection.
