Birdsland Reserve

Birdsland Reserve

The southern part of the Dandenong ranges, in between Belgrave as well as Lysterfield Lake Park, is Birdsland Reserve, a 75ha bushland reserve that houses indigenous birds and other animals. There is a chance to see an endangered Platypus.

The initial proprietor of Birdsland reserve was the Bird family, who owned the land in the 1940s until the 1980s. The reserve was officially opened in the present form in the mid-1980s after The Shires of Sherbrooke (now known as Yarra Ranges Council) purchased the property in the Bird family and marketed the reserve as a bushland community area.

The park has BBQs and is an ideal location for picnics.

There are walking trails all over the reserve to allow bushwalking.

The Reserve opens at 7:30am each day. Closing times can vary based on the time of year. Look at the signs at the entrance to the park for more information. The park is closed during days of the Total Fire Ban.

The Reserve entrance is located off Mount Morton Road in Belgrave South.

Birdsland Reserve is an amazing escape hidden within Lysterfield Lake Park and Belgrave. The reserve is known for its abundance of birds and a variety of native wildlife.

The extensive history of the reserve attests to its importance in the history of the region and makes it a popular spot for locals as well as tourists to the region.

History tells us that the Wurundjeri people who lived in the area around a century ago utilized the land for agriculture and cattle to graze. In the year 1940, the land was bought from the Birds Family after which it was used for sheep rearing. 40 years later the land was acquired from the Shire of Sherbrooke to ensure the integrity of the reserve prior to it being opened to the public in 1984. The reserve today is an area of sanctuary for native fauna and flora.
