Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre

What is a Neighbourhood Center?

A Neighbourhood Centre can be described as a place for residents of the neighborhood to meet. With the support of State Government funding, the first Neighbourhood Centers were founded in 1973. There are currently 7 Neighbourhood Centers in Cardinia Shire.

Because they are run by the community, Neighbourhood Centers are unique. The Committee of Management, staff and volunteers at the Centre all share in decision-making about management, policies, and procedures.

Neighbourhood centres have a unique atmosphere. These centres are friendly, welcoming and non-threatening spaces where everyone can meet new people, learn new skills, and get useful information. While Neighbourhood centres are different in their approach, all have the same goal: to meet the needs of their communities, promote personal growth, self-help, and sharing of information, and to provide stepping stones for people to grow.

The history of the Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre

Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre was founded in 1992 as a Beaconsfield Community Centre. It operated out of a mobile building on Beaconsfield Avenue. This was thanks to a group of enthusiastic residents from Beaconsfield who created an Incorporated Association in 1992 to manage a neighbourhood house. Because the Beaconsfield Avenue building was small, activities were held in multiple buildings.

The Centre moved to its new, larger location in O’Neil Road’s Beaconsfield Community Complex in 2004. This move allowed for expansion of programs, and the Centre grew quickly. To avoid confusion with the new name, the Centre’s name was changed from Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre to Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre.

A Statement of Aims and Objectives was created for the Centre and is still in use today.

All programs now take place under the same roof at Complex. There is a popular children’s program, as well as a variety of learning, social and art activities. While the activities and courses are subject to change according to community demand, many of the original programs remain popular and well-attended.
