History:

The aqueduct is of historical significance because it is an uncommon and unaltered model of techniques of construction and engineering. In 1914, after an extremely dry year it was the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) determined to expand the capacity of Melbourne’s storage for water. In 1916, the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (SR&WSC) began the construction of the Bunyip Main Race as well as Beaconsfield as well as Frankston Reservoirs, which will provide with water Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula. Melbourne Water decommissioned the Race between Beaconsfield Reservoir and Cannibal Creek in Tynong in 1997 due to the declining the quality of water and the high cost for managing the site. Melbourne Water transferred ownership of the Thewlis Road to Dickie Road section to Cardinia Shire Council at no cost, to enable the construction of this multi-purpose trail that was opened in 2009 to preserve the historic significance of the Aqueduct.
