St. Mina and St. Marina Coptic Orthodox Church

It all started when the Triple His Holiness the Blessed Pope Shenouda III, along with a plethora of bishops in Australia in the year 1989. While they were there they visited a parcel of land located in the vicinity of Hallam that was estimated to be that was 46 acres. The land was slated for development with the land, which includes a Church as well as an Hostel and an Coptic Village. While inspecting the land, he noticed an abandoned shed within the middle of the land , which was used to feed cattle. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III did the sign of the cross over the shed, and said “this manger will become a Church by the grace of the Lord.” When His Holiness’s second trip in Melbourne during 1991, He stated that he wanted to ordain a few young people for priesthood and serve in Australia. So, His Holiness chose the name of one of Melbourne to be nominated to the priesthood which was Fr. Abanoub as well as three other people from Sydney. They all traveled from Sydney to Egypt in the morning of the 13th of February , 1991. His Holiness welcomed them at St. Bishoy Monastery in his residence. The ordination ceremony took place on March 28, 1991, by his Holy Pope Shenouda III accompanied by numerous bishops who performed the ceremony. .

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III did the sign of the cross over the shed and declared that “this manger will become a Church by the grace of the Lord.” When His Holiness’s second visit in Melbourne the year 1991, he stated that he was planning to ordain a few young people for priesthood in Australia. Therefore, His Holiness picked only one individual who was from Melbourne to be appointed to the priesthood which was the case with Fr. Abanoub and three other people from Sydney. They all traveled from Sydney to Egypt in the morning of the 13th of February , 1991. His Holiness welcomed them into St. Bishoy Monastery in his residence. The ceremony was conducted on the 28th day of March 1991, by his Holy Pope Shenouda III accompanied by many bishops who were present to bless the ceremony.

In 1992, His Holiness made a call in 1992, requesting us to build an Apostolic Church in the area that was part of the Coptic Village. In the beginning, there was no space in which we could worship. The hall was then available for rent in James Cook Drive in Endeavour Hills on a Saturday night, and on Sundays until the midday. Then we would install the hall for a church and put up chairs along with the altar and holy board. We continued to gather there for approximately six months. The reason for that was to bring the congregation together and make the congregation feel that there was an entirely new church. The church’s name to be based on those of famous martyrs St. Mina and St. Marina. On Friday , the 9th of April 1993, the congregation offered the final mass in the hall that was rented. On Sunday 11th April 1993, the congregation relocated to the new site that was the temporary shed which His Holy Pope Shenouda III had blessed. We began to pray in the new church and also to work on the new site.
